Grizzly Lunch at Katmai Falls

_JGP1459-2-3.jpg

This captivating photograph captures a grizzly bear in action at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska—one of the most iconic wildlife scenes in North America. Poised at the edge of a roaring waterfall, the bear expertly waits as salmon leap upstream in their annual migration. The raw power of nature is on full display, as predator and prey meet in a timeless struggle for survival amid the rush of icy water and the wilderness of the Alaskan backcountry.

Grizzly bears in Katmai National Park are among the largest in the world, thanks to the park’s abundant salmon runs that provide a rich and fatty food source. These bears can eat up to 90 pounds of salmon a day during peak season, helping them gain the weight needed to survive long winter hibernations. Unlike inland grizzlies, Katmai bears are generally more tolerant of each other’s presence due to the concentrated food supply at places like Brooks Falls. Each bear has a distinct personality and appearance, and many are known and followed by name through bear-watching webcams and ranger programs, making them beloved wildlife celebrities.
